The basilica is the first building that we discover - by far - when we visit Scolacium. The remains are indeed very imposing. The basilica was one of the largest built in Calabria by the Normans, in the 11th century, around the same time as the cathedral and the castle of Gerace. Its construction is part of a political and spiritual program. It also demonstrates the strategic importance of Scolacium in the Middle Ages. It was built by recovering materials from the ancient Roman city - we can discern re-used elements. During the summer, a festival is held in the evening. Romantic and magical atmosphere guaranteed. Enjoy your visit.

Basilica of Santa Maria della Roccella located in the Archaeological Park of Scolacium. Really interesting and suggestive site. Too bad that apparently it would seem to travel towards the state of neglect. Little staff, albeit polite and attentive, does not seem to be enough. The Museum is well maintained but seems alive with old glory. Too bad indeed. The star in less burden for the above mentioned reason.

Norman Basilica located within the Scolacium Archaeological Park. Never finished and used over the centuries as a military stronghold and watchtower. It cannot be visited inside for safety reasons, you can admire the apse from the outside of the park, but to observe it specifically you must enter the park. The entrance ticket to the park and the visit to the museum are fully valid.

Bengtskär Lighthouse

Towering 52 meters above the sea, Bengtskär lighthouse is the tallest one in Scandinavia. The building started in in 1905 after the shipwreck of S/S Helsingfors and was completed in 1906. The lighthouse was designed by architect Florentin Granholm. On December a special petrol lantern, designed and built in Paris, was brought to Bengtskär and installed atop the tower.

German fleet bombarded Bengstkär in the First World War in 1914. Since the Gulf of Finland was heavily mined, it was not until 1919 that the surrounding seas were declared safe for shipping, that the light was lit again.

After the war the military value of Bengtskär increased as part of the defence system of independent Finland. In Second World War (1941) Soviet Union made a suprise attack to island. After a bloody battle, the small Finnish garrison emerged victorious. Intermittent repairs to the facility continued during the post-war period.
