Cinzano Castle

Cinzano, Italy

Cinzano Castle construction began around 1666 when the Marquis Carlo Renato Della Chiesa decided to enlarge and embellish the ancient castle and to surround it with a garden. In the beginning of the 19th century, the branch of the firstborn of the Chiesa family died out and the castle was sold with all of its possessions, which were divided up.

In 1872, the Marquis Ludovico Della Chiesa reacquired the castle and restored it in a Neo-medieval style embellishing it with new crenellation copied from that of the older tower and giving the castle a new rising entrance and a small out-building for the gardener.

Cinzano Castle, which has undergone various transformations over the centuries, remains a symbol of the town for its position and its admirable importance from all over the district. The castle is not visible, it has been divided into many private apartments ... May 2022 a ground floor apartment for sale.

It is a stop on my bike rides through the hills, essentially due to the presence of a small house with water distribution, some benches and a beautiful view.

Visby Cathedral

Visby Cathedral (also known as St. Mary’s Church) is the only survived medieval church in Visby. It was originally built for German merchants and inaugurated in 1225. Around the year 1350 the church was enlarged and converted into a basilica. The two-storey magazine was also added then above the nave as a warehouse for merchants.

Following the Reformation, the church was transformed into a parish church for the town of Visby. All other churches were abandoned. Shortly after the Reformation, in 1572, Gotland was made into its own Diocese, and the church designated its cathedral.

There is not much left of the original interior. The font is made of local red marble in the 13th century. The pulpit was made in Lübeck in 1684. There are 400 graves under the church floor.
