Montanaro Castle

Montanaro, Italy

Montanaro Castle was documented first time in the 14th century, but it was destroyed by French army in 1515 and partially rebuilt as residence by cardinal Bonifacio Ferrero. He was granted to build a mint to the tower of castle. Today the 16th century appearance still exists.

Spectacular location and full of history

I went to Montanaro twice, solely to admire its numerous historical wonders, and unfortunately I was only able to observe this majestic castle from the outside; I learned from local people that, being now owned by the Municipality, it is only open to the public on certain occasions. The building, from the medieval era but better developed in the Renaissance period, certainly appears to be well preserved, thanks to the restoration carried out in 1800, commissioned by the Frola counts (the last noble owners of the structure) and you can see the rear façade in particular better upon entering in a lovely and well-kept public park, with some games for children. The current appearance of the building is more that of a noble residence than of a castle, in the most common imagination; the most exposed architectural element, which almost overlooks the street, the Torre della Zecca, is often considered a true work apart; it dates back to 1527, the year in which the minting of coins was authorized by order of Cardinal Bonifacio Ferrero, which took place precisely in this portion of the building. The Montanaro castle has also been nominated as a "place of the heart" by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) and it is hoped that a conservative restoration of the entire work will be carried out, which will allow the community to authorize complete tourist visits.

Beautiful town, with a clear medieval imprint (historical period of which I am passionate), very kind inhabitants, various historical places that I recommend to visit. I will be back with pleasure, to visit the castle internally and take other long walks towards the historic mill of the town and other beauties of the place. Visit Montanaro, the right place for those who love culture and a peaceful holiday, immersed in history and nature.

Bengtskär Lighthouse

Towering 52 meters above the sea, Bengtskär lighthouse is the tallest one in Scandinavia. The building started in in 1905 after the shipwreck of S/S Helsingfors and was completed in 1906. The lighthouse was designed by architect Florentin Granholm. On December a special petrol lantern, designed and built in Paris, was brought to Bengtskär and installed atop the tower.

German fleet bombarded Bengstkär in the First World War in 1914. Since the Gulf of Finland was heavily mined, it was not until 1919 that the surrounding seas were declared safe for shipping, that the light was lit again.

After the war the military value of Bengtskär increased as part of the defence system of independent Finland. In Second World War (1941) Soviet Union made a suprise attack to island. After a bloody battle, the small Finnish garrison emerged victorious. Intermittent repairs to the facility continued during the post-war period.
