They are the ruins of an ancient castle, dating back to almost the year one thousand, a stronghold built by the city of Vercelli against Ivrea. It has a long and troubled history, in which it was even a base for marauding knights (in the 13th century). It is located on a rocky hill above the Cesnola hamlet and can be reached with a 15/20 minute walk, on an ancient medieval path that starts from the town. The castle is in a state of abandonment and is overgrown with vegetation. Despite this, the place still has it retained its charm.

Beautiful place of its kind, little valued and snubbed by the municipality and historical bodies alas. It has a fascinating history and I leave you to discover it. To get there there are two routes, one easy and one very demanding, even if short. There are also rock walls for climbing. I hope that sooner or later someone or an institution will fix it even if I don't think it will ever happen. P.s from what I know and for sale shortly let's say.

Ideal place to find some peace. It can be reached on foot or by bike

Wonderful panorama, easily reachable from Cesnola, it still seems in fair condition we hope for a restoration.

Very suggestive. However, the entire route must be cleaned up and made accessible

Sigmaringen Castle

Sigmaringen Castle was first mentioned in the year 1077 in the chronicles of Petershausen monastery. The oldest parts of the castle are concealed beneath the alterations made during the 17th and the 19th centuries. The secret of the earliest settlement built on this defendable rock will never be fully revealed: large-scale excavation work would be necessary, which the extensive land development renders impossible. Judging from the many Roman remains unearthed in the area around Sigmaringen, the 12th century keep known as the 'Roman Tower' could be traced back to a Roman predecessor.

The castle remains that have been preserved (gate, great hall and keep) date back to the Staufer period around 1200. The castle remains were integrated into subsequent buildings. The foundations of the castle buildings are to a large extent identical to the surrounding castle wall.

These remains give us a good idea of how the castle might have looked during the 12th century.
