Loreto Island Castle

Monte Isola, Italy

The islet of Loreto is situated north of Monte Isola, opposite Carzano. It is a private island which has been inhabited for centuries. Gabriele Rosa noticed “ruins of walls and two square towers”, remains of ancient fortifications. At the end of the 15th century. the islet was taken over by the Santa Chiara Sisters of the Convent of Brescia, who decided to build a convent. In 1910 a Neo-Gothic castle, with a small harbour, two towers and a surrounding conifer park, had already been built by Sir Vincenzo Richieri. The castle stands on a cliff falling sheer to the lake. The tower, battlements and light-coloured stone walls make it very picturesque.

Unfortunately it is the private property of an important family from Brescia. Lucky them. This is why it is not accessible for a visit. It was owned by the heirs of Count Alessandro Martinengo, descendant of Bartolomeo Colleoni. After convents and hermitages, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the new owner, cav. Vincenzo Richieri built a neo-Gothic style castle on the island around which he created a garden full of conifers, a marina and two light towers; practically giving it its current appearance. How nice it would be if the property were convinced by the Lombardy Region and Navigazione del Lago d'Iseo to open the island to visits at least fortnightly or monthly. The royals of England do it for their castles, so it is not fantasy. Even just a ride in the park would justify the initiative. The boat that circumnavigates the lake could, on those occasions, introduce a docking and allow passengers to take advantage of the next passage. Tourism on the lake would certainly benefit from it and God knows how much it is needed.

The small island of Loreto is located north of Monte Isola, opposite Carzano. Now privately owned, it has been inhabited for many centuries. Gabriele Rosa noticed there "ruins of walls and two square towers", which are the remains of ancient fortifications. At the end of the fifteenth century. the island became the property of the Sisters of Santa Chiara, who were part of the monastery of Brescia, thus having a convent built. In 1910, a neo-Gothic style castle had already been built by cav. Vincenzo Richieri, who had grown a magnificent park of conifers around it, with a small port and two small towers. From an inlet with two light towers, you go up to the villa which has a rectangular plan and is two floors high. The villa has a very suggestive aspect thanks to its turret, battlements, pale stone walls and a perspective view that can be enjoyed from the side, as it stands on a cliff overlooking the lake.

The castle on the island of Loreto, although private for many years, has a long history and is certainly one of the most beautiful places to admire on Lake Iseo.

Isola di Loreto is located in the middle of the sparkling blue waters of Lake Iseo in the province of Brescia. The first known documented instance of the island dates back to 1238, thanks to the discovery of some coins left from the Roman empire. Like a fairytale come to life, the small Loreto island is set amidst the dramatic background of snow capped mountains and features a neo-gothic castle perched on the edge of a cliff, plenty of greenery, two lighthouses, and a marina. Outside of rare and special occasions, the owners of this private island currently don’t permit visitors. Recently, the island became more famous thanks to George Clooney, who already having residence nearby, was going to buy it for his former lover, Elisabetta Canalis in 2010 (Rumours), but then he changed his mind.

Despite the fact you cannot visit the island, seeing it alone from the ship stimulates imagination how incredible thing would be to live there :)

Clementinum

The Clementinum is a historic complex of buildings in Prague. Until recently the complex hosted the National, University and Technical libraries, the City Library also being located nearby on Mariánské Náměstí. The Technical library and the Municipal library have moved to the Prague National Technical Library at Technická 6 since 2009. It is currently in use as the National Library of the Czech Republic.

Its history dates from the existence of a chapel dedicated to Saint Clement in the 11th century. A Dominican monastery was founded in the medieval period, which was transformed in 1556 to a Jesuit college. In 1622 the Jesuits transferred the library of Charles University to the Klementinum, and the college was merged with the University in 1654. The Jesuits remained until 1773, when the Klementinum was established as an observatory, library, and university by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.
