Monroy Castle

Monroy, Spain

Monroy Castle origins date back to 1309, when the area was privileged to nobleman Hernán Pérez de Monroy. The oldest part, square form main castle and three corner towers, date from the 14th century.  Later on, in the 16th century, it underwent restructuring and was converted into a palatial residence.

I had always seen it closed. I liked it, I hope to see it when it is completely restored. I would have liked to climb the towers.

It says it is open 24 hours but it is not. We came on a Saturday afternoon and the castle was closed. We asked the neighbors and they told us that they only opened by making an appointment with the town hall. The truth is that we haven't seen much movement in the town... being a hot weekend in March there could be more tourism... It's a shame it's not well used.

Very nice and well preserved, although with this covid thing you have to make an appointment to visit it

Monroy Castle is an emblematic place. Monumental. The town is worth a visit just for its Alcázar.

Walls of Constantinople

The Walls of Constantinople are a series of defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the city of Constantinople (today Istanbul) since its founding as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine the Great. With numerous additions and modifications during their history, they were the last great fortification system of antiquity, and one of the most complex and elaborate systems ever built. They were also the largest and strongest fortification in both the ancient and medieval world.

Initially built by Constantine the Great, the walls surrounded the new city on all sides, protecting it against attack from both sea and land. As the city grew, the famous double line of the Theodosian Walls was built in the 5th century. Although the other sections of the walls were less elaborate, they were, when well-manned, almost impregnable for any medieval besieger.
