Hidden but easy to find using maps from the Danube valley is a castle ruin including a small cave underneath. If you look at the masonry of the keep from the castle courtyard (or the location of the former palace) (see photo in the lower area, where humpback blocks were used), you will notice that, on the one hand, different stone materials were used for the walls and, furthermore, that the humpback blocks in the lower half appear to come from another building and were used again here. The stone layers and the stone formats do not match each other in many places! It had to be lined with other material. Since humpback cuboids are an expensive stone carving work and were made to fit the original building, but they don't fit here at all, it seems obvious to me that they were used here a second time. Medieval building material recycling, so to speak... In the absence of enough humpback blocks, simple rubble stones were walled up higher up.

Partly well-preserved/restored ruins with a fantastic view of the Danube Valley. The ruins can only be reached on foot or by bike and are therefore not overcrowded. To enjoy the great view, you have to climb the wall a bit. But it's enough to take the first step.

We were here on September 1st, 2022 as part of an e-bike tour of the Kallenberg castle ruins. I didn't like the signs to the castle ruins, or rather I didn't see any, so I relied on our local guide. The ruins are also quite hidden. Unfortunately, there is no parking space or similar available for those traveling by car. I thought the state of preservation of the walls was really good and the view over the Danube valley was fantastic. The well-preserved keep can only be viewed from the outside and the bushes have spread over a large area within the castle courtyard. Only the cellars of the Kallenberger Hof below are still there, with a sign in front of them. Well worth seeing as part of a hike or bike tour.

The ruins are a bit boring but the landscape you see from there is unique and spectacular. Also great place to camp within the walls.
