Cementeri d'Alcoi, Alcoy, Spain

The Cementerio de San Antonio Abad (transl. Saint Anthony Cemetery) or Cementeri d'Alcoi is a cemetery located in Alcoy, Spain. This 19th-century cemetery is considered to be one of the most interesting in the Valencian Community, due to its unusual architecture and examples of Valencian Art Nouveau period funerary sculpture. It is listed on the European Cemeteries Route, a cultural itinerary established by the Council of Europe.

Place of peace and worship.?Pantheons and sculptures with a lot of history. Alcoyano Cemetery, one of the oldest and most preserved, in which the deaths of Camilo Blanes Cortés (Camilo Sesto) rest ?. Underground gallery, unique in Spain. It is worth visiting.? ⚰

Spectacular place! It is well worth visiting this cemetery, it preserves great examples of modernist and eclectic art. It is a unique example in Spain as it has underground galleries with niches. They are spectacular and are very well ventilated and have a lot of light. Be sure to visit the part of the civil cemetery, an area very different from the rest.

I expected more from this cemetery knowing that it is on the list of the best cemeteries in Europe. It has free parking and (dirty) toilets. It is pleasant to take a walk among the pantheons looking for the shade. There are really old tombs and in poor condition but that gives it a touch.

Visby Cathedral

Visby Cathedral (also known as St. Mary’s Church) is the only survived medieval church in Visby. It was originally built for German merchants and inaugurated in 1225. Around the year 1350 the church was enlarged and converted into a basilica. The two-storey magazine was also added then above the nave as a warehouse for merchants.

Following the Reformation, the church was transformed into a parish church for the town of Visby. All other churches were abandoned. Shortly after the Reformation, in 1572, Gotland was made into its own Diocese, and the church designated its cathedral.

There is not much left of the original interior. The font is made of local red marble in the 13th century. The pulpit was made in Lübeck in 1684. There are 400 graves under the church floor.
