Cessford Castle, Roxburghshire, United Kingdom

Cessford Castle is a large ruined mid-15th century L-plan castle near the village of Cessford, midway Jedburgh and Kelso. It1 was built around 1450 by Andrew Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe. It is possible that the castle incorporates parts of an earlier structure. The fortalice was built on an L-plan, with a main keep with a wing of almost the same magnitude. With up to six storeys, two of which were barrel vaulted, and with walls up to 4 m thick, it was a formidable place of defence. The castle was besieged in 1523 by the Earl of Surrey. The castle was abandoned in 1650.

If you are interested in Scottish History this Castle if the thick walls could talk although now a Ruin believe me I was still impressed please look at the Artist impressions of it only single track roads to eventually find this big gem .

Lovely place to have a look around if your in the area. Looks like it's been filled in abit on the ground floor. The history is on the board at the gate and another one around the other side of the castle. The views are amazing too.

Great little castle. It's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The main room is full of elderberry trees. Room for a couple of cars on the road outside.

Fantastic castle, visited on a hot day, but the shade provided by the remaining castle was glorious. There is an interesting information board, albeit weathered. Single space car park. Worth a look at.

Herceg Novi Old Town

Herceg Novi was founded (on a former small fishing village, existing since Roman Empire times) as a fortress in 1382 by first Bosnian King Stjepan Tvrtko I and was called Sveti Stefan or Castelnuovo. The Turks conquered Herceg Novi in 1482, and ruled for 200 years, until 1687. However, there was a short pause between 1538 and 1539 when it was held by the Spaniards before they were defeated in the Siege of Castelnuovo. Turkey ruled again until 1687, from then until 1797, the town was ruled by the Venetian Republic.

The Herceg Novi old town is amazing. It is on a fairly steep hill that leads all the way down to the sea. Wandering through the small stairways to the various plazas and fortresses is a many hour adventure.
