Sadly, like the others I discovered this Castle is closed for health and safety reasons. It was a terribly wet day in Kirkcudbright and the Castle looked imposing in the rain. Interestingly the little shop at the end was open despite the main attraction being closed off. I felt sorry for the guy on duty but he was so cheery and helpful a real credit to Historic Scotland. He gave us some advice on other attractions and a good cafe recommendation nearby. I can't give five stars when the attraction was closed, I would give five stars to the man in the shop.

Unfortunately this is the second Historic Scotland site I have visited in as many days that is closed for safety reasons. By the looks of previous reviews, it seems to have been closed for a year and no dates given for reopening. You can walk around the outside, and several information boards are provided about the history of the castle and the different parts of it. Impressive ruins and you still get a good view but not as much as if you were able to go inside.

These are wonderful images. My GGG was a McClellan. My boyfriend and l both have MacLellan ancestors. Such an interesting and intriguing history! Haven’t gotten to visit yet but it’s my hope to see this and these lands my ancestors lived upon, top of my bucket list. Thank you for sharing!

I am very disappointed with historic Scotland they have barried off the sites across Scotland due to health and safety issues which I understand but I don't get why it is taking so long to get these sites back up and running the castle itself is situated in Kirkcudbright and looks a fascinating site however you cannot gain access due to the barriers so will need to return in the future
