St. Stephen's Church

Vignory, France

Built in the early 11th century, the Church of St. Stephen of Vignory, a listed Historic Monument, is a remarkable example of architecture prefiguring the Romanesque style. Its nave with three levels, topped with an exposed roof structure, sculpted capitals, ambulatory chancel, many medieval statues and Romanesque bell tower with three floors of bays, make it an unmissable destination for all lovers of sacred art.

Nice little town, but the church is in a catastrophic condition. Lots of mold and moisture damage. some with old ceiling frescoes. the smell was sometimes borderline. Parking directly in front of the church

Worth seeing, but you should urgently do something to preserve the church.

Really impressive. A architecturally very interesting church with plenty of explications. Considering the also really beautiful castle ruins, the market hall and the pittoresque houses on is wondering why they aren't classified as one of les plus beaux villages de la France ?

Beautiful little church with lots of beautiful little chapels inside with great statues. Furthermore, this Romanesque church is very old since it dates back to the 11th century (medieval church).

Towering 52 meters above the sea, Bengtskär lighthouse is the tallest one in Scandinavia. The building started in in 1905 after the shipwreck of S/S Helsingfors and was completed in 1906. The lighthouse was designed by architect Florentin Granholm. On December a special petrol lantern, designed and built in Paris, was brought to Bengtskär and installed atop the tower.

German fleet bombarded Bengstkär in the First World War in 1914. Since the Gulf of Finland was heavily mined, it was not until 1919 that the surrounding seas were declared safe for shipping, that the light was lit again.

After the war the military value of Bengtskär increased as part of the defence system of independent Finland. In Second World War (1941) Soviet Union made a suprise attack to island. After a bloody battle, the small Finnish garrison emerged victorious. Intermittent repairs to the facility continued during the post-war period.
