Alnö, Sweden

The old church on Alnö is one of the oldest and best preserved in Medelpad region. It was built in the late 1100s. The church had two purposes, as well as place of worship but also as a defensive building. There are well-preserved mural paintings in star vaults (added in the 1500s). The triumph crucifix is also from the 1500s, made by Haaken Gulleson. The pulpit is from the 17th century.

A unique and well-preserved church from the middle ages. The building is one of its kind, full of artefacts, mural paintings and historical remains. Well worth a detour if you're close to the island. The church is quite popular for weddings and christenings during the sunny season, but guided tours are also arranged on a regular basis throughout the summer. Please bear in mind that the church is closed during the winter, so plan your visit ahead.

Danmark Church

The first written record of church in Danmark locality date back to the year 1291. Close to the church are several stones with a Christian text and cross inscribed. The oldest parts of the present red-brick church are from the 1300s. In the late 1400s the church was enlarged to the appearance it has today. The church has been modified both internally and externally several times, among other things after the fires in 1699 and 1889. There are lot of well-preserved mural paintings in the walls.
